Argyle is back in a big way. It’s a perfect print for fall and even into spring. Argyle may have started as a Scottish classic, but you don’t have to be a golfer or a country-club regular to wear it today. The key is to keep the rest of your outfit modern and let the Argyle piece be the star. Explore my Carmel Personal Stylist tips for incorporating Argyle into your style repertoire!
Carmel Personal Stylist Tips for Argyle Implementation
Start small. If you’re new to the pattern, try Argyle socks, a scarf, or a handbag. These small touches add personality without making your outfit feel too traditional. Starting small might be your style. Not all of us want to be sporty and trendy, but add a touch here and there. I love this classic Argyle crossbody bag!

Okay, on to actually incorporating the print into your wardrobe.
An Argyle sweater or sweater vest can be a wonderful addition to a polished casual wardrobe. For women, pair it with straight-leg jeans, trousers, or a simple skirt. For men, an Argyle sweater works beautifully with chinos, dress pants or dark denim. Also, an easy way to wear Argyle is a pair of socks! Let them show with your loafers and flats.
Pay attention to color. Traditional Argyle often features navy, burgundy, green, cream, and gray. For a more contemporary look, choose softer neutrals or a sweater with only two or three colors. The simpler the color combination, the more modern the overall effect.
Don’t overdo the pattern. Argyle is a strong visual element, so you generally don’t need another competing print. Pair it with solids or subtle textures. A great rule of thumb is one statement pattern at a time. However, you can add a subtle stripe such as navy and white under your vest or sweater. Or wear the sweater under your favorite blazer such as hunter green, burgundy, navy, denim, olive, brown, or even cream.
The number one rule about wearing Argyle: Make it your own. Fashion isn’t about following every trend. It’s about choosing clothing that communicates who you are and how you want to be seen. Argyle can look classic, sophisticated, playful, or modern depending on what you pair with it.
