Men: What to Consider If You Need a New Suit

I recently posted an Instagram photo that featured King Charles and Queen Camila, specifically highlighting what the King wore. I had read that the King has always favored bespoke (custom-made) suits. With nearly an unlimited budget, I would too. Who wouldn’t want a suit made just for me, with the ability to pick my fabric and even the special lining? Many men hear the words “bespoke suit” and assume it simply means a very expensive suit. Not exactly. Bespoke and off-the-rack are two very different ways of buying clothing, and knowing the difference can help you decide what’s worth your money. Here’s a rundown from your Carmel Personal Stylist.

Off-the-Rack versus Bespoke

Let’s start with off-the-rack. This means the suit is already made and hanging in a store, ready for purchase. You walk in, try on a few options, and buy the one that fits best. Brands like Brooks Brothers, J.Crew, and SuitSupply all offer off-the-rack suits.

The biggest advantage? Convenience. You can get one the same day, and there are usually options at many price points. A decent off-the-rack suit can look great, especially if you have it tailored afterward. In fact, hemming the pants, adjusting the sleeves, and shaping the waist can make a huge difference.

The downside is simple: it was not made for your body. It was made for a general body shape based on sizing averages. So if you have broad shoulders, a slim waist, athletic legs, or posture quirks, the fit may never be perfect.

Now let’s talk bespoke.

A tailor takes your measurements, studies your posture, shoulder slope, stance, and preferences, then creates a unique pattern just for your body. You usually choose the fabric, lining, buttons, lapel width, pocket style, and more. Multiple fittings happen during the process.

This is the gold standard of suiting.

When done well, a bespoke suit moves better, fits better, and often feels more comfortable than anything you’ve bought off a rack. It can also be incredibly flattering because it is built to balance your proportions.

The downside? Time and money. Bespoke usually takes weeks or months, and quality bespoke work often starts in the thousands. Houses like Savile Row tailors made bespoke famous, with names such as Henry Poole & Co. and Huntsman.

So which should you choose?

If you need a suit for occasional weddings, business meetings, or events, a strong off-the-rack suit plus tailoring is a good value. Try to find a store that includes alterations since you will probably need them. Brooks Brothers, Von Maur, and Nordstrom are all stores I love that include alterations and offer superb quality and style. These stores have sales too, and offer a range of brands and pricing. It will probably surprise you!

If you wear suits regularly, struggle with fit, or want something exceptional, bespoke can absolutely be worth it.

And one last style note. Whether it’s bespoke or off-the-rack, always pay attention to shoulders first. Shoulder fit is the hardest thing to alter later. Get that right, and everything else becomes easier.
