How to Maintain Style as You Lose Weight

With the abundance of newer drug therapies out there, wellness coaches and apps, many people are either done losing weight or in the process of losing weight. I think this is a good trend because a healthy weight is healthier! But how do you dress when you are losing weight, and your weight fluctuates each week? You still need to make a good impression, no matter what your profession is. So I’ve compiled some Carmel Personal Stylist tips for you.

Carmel Personal Stylist Tips for Maintaining Style During Weight Loss

Don’t forget to purchase clothing with stretch because it adjusts to differences in size. Stretch can “give,” and you will still look like you are wearing something that fits. There is a stretch in jeans, knit shirts, knit dresses, etc. Liverpool is a particularly stretchy fabric, as are jeans such as Mother and Paige.

Thin, clingy knits or sheet knits are not flattering to heavier frames. Heavier, structured fabrics are.

Watch loud prints or stripes in horizontal or diagonal designs. They are not flattering to those of us trying to look slimmer as we lose weight.

When I feel heavier and want to look slimmer, I reach for darker colors and monochromatic looks with the same color head to toe.

Watch your shoes and boots. Certain styles are more slimming. Boots that are taller and sit beyond the ankle do not cut you off and are more slimming. Shoes that have an open vamp are more slimming too. Some call this “toe cleavage.”

If your weight plan involves losing many pounds (like more than 10 pounds), purposely buy clothes that have clean, straight lines. These styles will be easier to alter because the tailor just takes in the sides or adds some easy darts. For example, I had some rather expensive red pants that I liked, but after losing 15 pounds, they just hung on me. I couldn’t decide whether or not to alter, but decided to try it. I am so glad that I did! The pants fit me so well — they looked like new pants — and the cost was $20. I felt like I had new pants!

Don’t ignore woven clothing either. It’s structured, slimming, and not difficult to alter.

If the alternations are not difficult, such as taking in seams, shop around for your alterations vendor. You don’t need a bespoke professional.

If you are losing weight, it’s not the time to buy designer or more expensive clothing you won’t wear for very long. I recommend buying designer or high-ticket pieces of clothing, but save these purchases as a reward for your weight loss!

After being a Carmel Personal Stylist for more than 14 years, I have discovered that clients are often hesitant to pay the extra fees involved in using a tailor. This is a mistake because most clothing is not made for most of the population! Plus, fit is so key to how a garment looks. A dart here or a hem there will make all the difference.
