As a Carmel Wardrobe Stylist, I am always aware of what is going on in the diet and exercise world. The latest trends always come up when I work with people, even though that isn’t my focus. One emerging shift is weight loss through medications such as GLP-1. More Americans using this drug is affecting not only the way people dress and even approach fashion but, beyond that, their approach to food and eating out.
I don’t have a strong opinion on the drug, but I am happy it seems to work for so many people. Whenever someone is happy about their weight and overall appearance is always a good thing!
Restaurant and Retail Trends
It is so interesting to see that the restaurant industry is realizing people don’t seem to want huge portions anymore. They want smaller portions that are higher in protein. In a recent New York Times article, this was discussed. Restaurants may be slow to change, but society will force their hand. Another example is that adults are wanting children’s meals. I know during a recent family trip, my sister-in-law picked an eating establishment that allowed adults to buy children’s meals. How interesting?
As Americans continue to be smaller, retail will need to respond as well. Plus-size clothing has never been optimal. Stores that focus on bigger sizes are starting to see demand diminish. I hope that petite sizes will come back. Now, petite does not just refer to weight–it really refers more to bone structure and height. I was shopping at Anthropology the other day and noticed a new section in the store called “Petites.” It was a nice assortment of jeans. I hope to see more.
Carmel Wardrobe Stylist Tips During Weight Loss
People who are in the process of using this medication to lose weight have the dilemma of a closet that may no longer fit properly.
- I suggest going through your clothes and, as they no longer fit or even look good, put them in a pile. We will come back to this!
- The same style principles that apply during normal times apply here. Build up your core neutrals in the colors that flatter you. (If you need this analysis, reach out – I can provide one!) For instance: jeans, chinos, jackets, and shirts/blouses. For ladies, a dress can be very versatile since you can add a belt as your waist gets smaller.
- Buy clothes with stretch so they adjust as your build/shape changes.
- Buy good quality but not the most expensive options. For women, I like Liverpool jeans (stretchy) and JCrew Factory clothing for men and women. Target has some inexpensive options as well. Remember these clothes will just get you through the weight loss period. You won’t keep them for several years.
- Once you decide the few items you’d like to alter, find a good local seamstress in your community. You don’t want to alter a blazer with shoulders that don’t fit. This is way too expensive, with not always positive results.
- An easy way to decide what to alter is the price you are quoted by the seamstress. Most of the time, paying $50 or more is too much.
- As you lose weight, consider adding some inexpensive accessories such as purses, belts, scarves, ties, and shoes. This simple addition can make your wardrobe more exciting as your weight goes down.
