If you are like me, you have fond memories of the summer. I lived in a rural area of Indiana, and it seemed there were hours to read, play outside with my neighbors and pets, and, when I was old enough to drive, meet friends at the swimming pool or local hangouts.
Back then, being tan was always my goal. Now I didn’t tan with iodine and Baby Oil as some girls did, but I did burn and then tan naturally; I think I used Hawaiian Tropic. The point is, well, um those days are gone. I really watch the time I spend in the sun and make sure I use sunscreen and at times wear the old lady hat. I also use self tanners — I am a huge fan of Jergen’s Glow products. I put it on in the morning after my shower, mixed with my usual Curel lotion. It creates a nice, natural looking tan over several weeks.
I also try to stay out of the sun during the hottest time of the day…noon – 1 pm. I am also considering sitting under the giant umbrellas at my local pool.
We have a family wedding this summer in Central Florida, near Daytona. Since I love to body surf in the ocean (we’ll be on the Atlantic that has the really tall waves), I am already thinking about my strategy for avoiding burning and too much sun. Beyond the things I have already mentioned, I am considering buying a swim shirt or an SPF coated T-shirt to wear over my swimsuit while I am swimming. I saw some interesting shirts in the Lands End catalog I might purchase. It is approved by the American Cancer Society as a skin cancer prevention tool, and it’s cute, too!
Hope you enjoy the sun and a little more carefree time!
