An item I think all of us need in our wardrobe this spring is some type of trench coat. I am not talking about the long, stogy version that you may already have. I am referring to one with clean lines that is a bit shorter and perky. With years of experience as an Indiana Wardrobe Stylist, I’ve acquired a set of tips to keep in mind when selecting a trench coat this spring.
Indiana Wardrobe Stylist Tips for Selecting a Trench Coat
Consider your scale. Are you petite, extra tall, plus size, etc.? Based on that, you can select a coat with the right amount of detail. Petite women should avoid coats with lots of details, like 12″ flowers, large lapels, and cuffs. Taller women can wear coats with numerous details well.
Look at the coat’s shape. (Yes, coats can give you a shape.) Does the coat nip in at the waist, expand your shoulders slightly, have an A shape? Details such as these will highlight your curves.
Consider your best colors. This is easy to do if you’ve had a color analysis and know your neutral and “wow” colors. For example, if black is not your best neutral or looks just okay on you, you won’t want to invest in a black coat! Because I am a spring, I personally have coats in navy, khaki, nude pink, and a khaki plaid.
Evaluate the cut. If you have any weight at all in your middle, avoid a double-breasted coat. It will add weight and bulk that you do not want. A single-breasted coat will be more flattering.
Review the length of the coat. It’s my feeling that we all need one longer, below-the-knee spring coat. But a shorter coat that is lower-thigh length can be useful as well.
Make sure it’s a true raincoat. Last September, I got caught up in Hurricane Helene weather during vacation and hadn’t packed a raincoat. I fortunately found a great navy one with a hood and water repellent fabric at a Tommy Hilfiger outlet. If storage space is an issue or you’re traveling, consider a coat that folds up into a bag or a disposable rain poncho.

Here’s a trench coat I’m considering adding to my personal wardrobe. The wrap front is slimming and the dusty blue color is flattering.
Keep it sassy, Indy.
