I took these photos at a recent Nordstrom Fashion Show for Influencers. They show many ways you can start to change up your style as we leave summer for fall. Some are very on trend, like the lace shorts and midi skirt. I purchased the pink Cing a Cept shirt above because I have a new beige pinstripe suit I haven’t worn yet! I also own an olive midi skirt I will be wearing soon, paired with a silk blouse I already own. As August sneaks up on us, it can sometimes feel like a style panic. It could still be hot outside, but inside we are not feeling the bright colors and prints of summer anymore. We might come up short with interesting outfit ideas and fresh ways to express our style. I hear you! Even as a Carmel Personal Stylist, I often have these same feelings and frustrations. Here are some tips to make your summer clothes transition into fall and look new and stylish.

Carmel Personal Stylist Tips for Transitioning to Fall Style

I am really convinced, after being a stylist for more than 13 years, that the way to stretch our closet is first to have some great basics. With clients, I always establish their best neutrals to buy basics in. For instance, I am a spring, and I look better in clear, bright colors. My better neutrals are navy, all shades of blue, brown, camel, and cream. I buy my skirts, dresses, blazers, and pants in these colors. So this is my base. Don’t be afraid to spend on your basics. Better quality means they will last and look amazing.

Here are some ideas to sail into fall without having to buy a whole new wardrobe.

1. It’s okay to wear white into fall still, but wear it differently. I do wear white jeans year-round, but some people don’t like to do that. I wear it a little differently. I don’t pair white with white and pastels; I wear it with more fall colors such as olive green, rust, red, brown, and sometimes navy.

2. Get out your fall shoes and start wearing them in August. This can include camel flats and animal print shoes in leopard, python, cow, and even zebra.

3. Don’t forget the power of a dress. Let it do the work. Dresses are one and done; they allow you to focus on other parts of your outfit such as shoes, jewelry, and the belt. Colors such as cream, red, brown, navy, and olive can easily be worn into November. Just add a blazer or casual jacket. If you need a new dress or two, I highly recommend a shirtdress in cotton or silk in a solid or even a print. Also, think about the basics you have — do they coordinate? If not, pass up the statement piece and find something that meshes with your current pieces.

4. If you need an additional blazer or casual jacket, buy a neutral or print that goes with the summer basics you already have. I like to wear a beige linen blazer with white jeans into September with flats and gold jewelry. I sometimes add a fall-color belt such as red or olive.

5. Navy also looks great with white jeans, khaki, and even olive pants. Add a polo in a bright color, scarf as a belt, and a loafer.

Another late summer move is to get out your light color boots. They can really start to transition your outfits to fall. I especially love a camel or light cream/navy bootie that is dressy. It will make all of your outfits just a little more special.
