Taking a Break from Retail, Part 2

As you consider taking your own break from retail shopping, here are some new habits I developed as a result from my experience. Even as a Personal Image Consultant, I found the experience beneficial.

Your Personal Image Consultant’s New Habits

I’m More Creative With My Outfits
After not buying clothes for six months, I could look in my closet and see what I already owned with fresh eyes. I realized how much I had and decided to have some fun making new outfits from what was already there. I also made many existing outfits more novel by finding some different and fun shoes.

I’m More Selective in My Purchases
Since the six months of withdrawal, I’ve become much more selective with the items I purchase.Personal Image Consultant Beth Divine recommends trying a retail withdrawal image shows woman in clothes closet

I don’t automatically buy a piece until I check my closet to see if I already have it. For example, I had been wanting to replace a favorite cream lace blouse and thought I had found a great replacement at Anthropology. I did buy it and love it, but I realized I needed a cami to wear underneath it. But instead of immediately ordering the piece, I looked in my drawer and found I already owned the perfect cami. I just hadn’t worn it yet.

I’m much more observant as well. I can better detect if an item is really the right color for me and I’m more in tune with what fits me. I’m not constantly returning items that don’t work.

I Notice More Details Around My Home
I also discovered that I had been so focused on my clothes and wardrobe that I’d somewhat neglected other areas of my home. My plates were old and worn, so I gradually added some new dishes. I found some perky pink and green placemats and napkins to put together with some new centerpieces as well. This was fun and nourished my creative side and the need for color in my life.

I’m Less of a Social Shopper
I’ve realized a big trigger for my previous buying habits were my friends and family who loved shopping. I’m now more cautious about making purchases when I shop with them and focus on taking joy in what they buy.

My Final Thoughts on My Retail Withdrawal

It’s an experience I definitely recommend, so I challenge you to stop buying clothes for a while and see what you really need! I know I’ve saved money with my new habits and have stronger appreciation for the pieces I have.

Full disclosure, I did have a few serendipity moments during my retail withdrawal. I ordered some replacement sleepwear from my favorite online site and received a gold holiday sweater by mistake. I loved it and kept it. Also, my niece was shopping for some items for a family photo shoot and bought a buy one get one free item. She asked if I wanted the free one. I did (of course) and now have a comfy velour cream jacket, an item I needed in my casual wardrobe.
