I am writing this blog for two reasons: I just returned from Southern California, where the hair is blonde and the women are very thin; and I am shopping for a jeans wardrobe for one of my Indiana Personal Stylist clients.
My Observations from Huntington Beach
Please let me digress — we visit Huntington Beach every year and never know what the weather will be like. This time was very warm, which we loved. I always struggle with this West Coast trip because I need to have my winter coat at hand for when we return and need layers for the California weather.
How did I do this time? I feel my style was passable for Cali Chic, but I did not have my perfect leather jacket and the jeans I know make me look amazing. I saw several women wearing jeans there in such a flattering way! Wider leg, fitted; beautiful belt at the waist, and some type of unique blouse or layer, such as a buttery leather jacket (faux or real). What I noticed was the perfect fit of the jeans — and this brand happened to be Levi’s. (But the wearer could not have even been 25, so consider that!)
Something amazing that happened was at the Long Beach Airport on the flight home, I posted this travel outfit on Instagram. I chuckled because the marketing person at the airport began following me and wanted me to send her the photo. I was actually wearing white jeans, etc. Here is the photo.
My Indiana Personal Stylist Approach to Buying Jeans
Anyway, I am home now and diving into a client’s request for good jeans for a casual work environment, college, and social events. This woman is 25, size 4, and 5’ 9″. I also know her style and shape is eclectic, and she’s a true winter (black hair, fair skin, and blue eyes). I always have this important information and require a first appointment to learn this before I do any other service. Why? Because how could I possibly be a competent stylist for you and shop or cleanse your closet without knowing your best shapes, your style, and your color season? I have been a stylist for 12 years, and I have done shopping without a first appointment. I’ve learned it never goes as well as it could!
Okay, I am stepping down from my soapbox and now…jeans.
No matter your age, your jeans matter. And never before have there been more choices out there, which is good and bad. Combine all the choices with the number of people who buy jeans online, and what is the result? People are frustrated and bewildered.
I would remedy that problem by always, always buying jeans in person. Why? There are so many reasons. You need to see the fit, sit down in them, see how they look on you, and feel the fabric. I always ask clients to sit down in their jeans. Also, consider the amount of stretch. Not all jeans have stretch now. In that case, you may need to size up.
Always wear the shoes you want to wear with the jeans when you shop. If you are someone who knows you won’t get jeans shortened, buy your jeans at a store that has an in-house alterations department, such as Nordstrom or Von Maur.
