Friends, this is a blog from my colleague, David Edwards, who owns David Edwards Clothier. As an Image Consultant, I like this blog because he talks about wide-leg pants for men, too.
Good morning from México City. Last week’s menswear style email was about the wide-leg pants trend perfect for the creative, well-traveled, and fashion-forward man who loves to make an entrance. Here in México City, the wide-leg pants trend is hot and all the men are wearing it.
Wide-leg or big pants can vary from person to person, but the key to styling them lies in understanding structure and proportions. These pants, known for their looser fit and flare, create an illusion of longer legs and offer a striking silhouette with their additional fabric. To achieve a balanced and flattering look, pair your wide-leg pants with structured or tucked-in tops. This approach helps define your shape and creates a harmonious silhouette, ensuring you look polished and sophisticated.
The 3 Style Tips for Wearing Wide-Leg Pants from Your Image Consultant
- Casual tuck tee: the tuck is a must because it creates structure in your tee and defines your waistline. If a tee is large too and left untuck it will create an image of the tee and pants being too large.
- Simple layers: a tee or tank top with an open button-down shirt. It pairs well with most styles of wide-leg pants and creates a more intentional, dressed-up look.
- Blazer: elevates your wide-leg pants style details. When pairing a blazer with wide-leg pants, roll the pants’ hems so that it swing rather than puddle.
Wide-leg pants are more than just a trend—they’re a statement. These pants provide a way to stand out while staying comfortable and stylish.
Here are my thoughts, as an Image Consultant:
Who can wear wide-leg pants? Everyone. If you are a man with larger legs and torso, wear moderately wide leg pants. Be careful of wearing an extra wide-leg pant because it will add volume you don’t want.
Also, keep in mind the old image consultant tip — if you want to slim down your look, wear a darker color. (I do this myself because my hips are much bigger than my narrow shoulders.
My husband is tall and slim but actually has shorter legs and long torso. This is the unique shape he dresses. I will never forget one of the first times I went out with him in a group. He wore high-waisted dress pants, with pleats and wider legs with a cuff I believe. He wore a fitted dress shirt and a wool, v-neck buttoned vest. It looked great in it because it accomplished this: added width to his very narrow legs, and made his waist shorter since he was wearing high-waist pants. The narrow, fitted top brought it all into balance between top and bottom.
He was a man of style (we’ve been married for 23.5 years now!!) He just has good taste. Ha-ha.
