It’s hard to imagine, but the culprit of some of your clothing allergies may lie in the laundry room! Many people think allergies only come from food, pollen, or pets. However, products commonly used in the laundry room can also cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. If you often experience itching, redness, rashes, or dry skin and cannot figure out why, your laundry products may be part of the problem. From my experiences as a Carmel Personal Stylist, I’ve compiled a list of common causes and solutions.
Common Causes of Laundry Irritation
Laundry detergents contain a variety of ingredients designed to clean clothes, remove stains, and add fragrance. While these ingredients help make clothing smell fresh, they can sometimes irritate sensitive skin. Fragrances are one of the most common causes of reactions. Manufacturers often use a mixture of chemicals to create scents, and some people are sensitive to these ingredients. Artificial dyes can also trigger skin irritation in certain individuals.
Fabric softeners are another common culprit. Whether they come in liquid form or dryer sheets, fabric softeners leave a coating on clothing to make fabrics feel softer and reduce static. Unfortunately, the chemicals used to create these effects can remain on clothing and come into contact with the skin all day long. Some people develop itching, redness, or even eczema flare-ups after using these products.
Dry cleaning may not agree with your skin either. Feel free to ask your dry cleaner what chemicals are used to clean your clothes. There are some eco-friendly dry cleaners who focus on using clean chemicals to avoid too many deposits on clothing.

Scent boosters have become increasingly popular in recent years. These products are designed to make clothes smell stronger and fresher for longer periods. However, they often contain concentrated fragrances that can be especially troublesome for people with allergies or sensitive skin.
Carmel Personal Stylist Solutions for Laundry Irritants
If you suspect your laundry products are causing problems, consider switching to fragrance-free and dye-free alternatives. Look for detergents labeled “Free & Clear” or “Sensitive Skin.” These products are formulated without many of the ingredients that commonly cause reactions.
Instead of traditional fabric softeners, try using wool dryer balls. Wool dryer balls help reduce static, soften fabrics naturally, and shorten drying time without adding chemicals to your clothing. White vinegar can also be used during the rinse cycle as a natural fabric softener. The vinegar smell disappears once clothes are dry.
For stain removal, choose simple products with fewer ingredients whenever possible. You can also use baking soda to help freshen laundry naturally and reduce odors.
When buying clothing, consider washing new garments before wearing them. New clothes often contain finishing chemicals, dyes, and residues from manufacturing that may irritate sensitive skin. A thorough wash before wearing can remove many of these substances. Mass-produced clothing that is extremely inexpensive often has added chemicals.
If skin irritation continues despite changing products, consult a healthcare professional or dermatologist. Identifying the source of an allergy can take time, but making simple changes in your laundry routine may provide significant relief. For many people, choosing fragrance-free and dye-free products is an easy step toward healthier skin and greater comfort every day.
