Beyond Style: Sunglasses Are Important!

As an Indiana Personal Stylist who consistently studies style and helps people improve their style game, I have always been a fan of sunglasses. I believe they are a pivotal style accessory, especially in the summer when we are less likely to wear the perfect blazer because it’s so hot and humid. It’s amusing to me how often I’m asked to help clients find the perfect shape for eyeglasses and sunglasses. While I do know some principles about how to select these important accessories, I am not as skilled as other stylists who specialize in eyewear style. But here is some of my advice.

Sunglasses Advice from Your Indiana Personal Stylist

Wear them! Sunglasses are not just a style accessory that makes us feel like Audrey Hepburn or Sophia Loren. They are essential to the health of our eyes! Many eye doctors recommend wearing sunglasses whenever you go outside, even if it’s cloudy or overcast because the risk of ultraviolet radiation is ALWAYS present.

Indiana Personal Stylist Beth Divine advises wearing sunglasses that protect your eyes and fit your face shape image shows group of people wearing sunglassesHere’s a little tutorial about ultraviolet radiation. There are two types, UVA and UVB. Most UVA rays reach the Earth’s surface. The Earth’s atmosphere shields us from most UVB rays, but not all. The amount of UVB rays that reach the Earth’s surface depends on latitude, altitude, time of year, and other factors. UVB rays cause sunburns, skin cancer, skin aging, and snow blindness. They can also lower your body’s ability to fight illness.

Therefore, the best sunglasses to buy are those that offer 100 percent protection from UVA and UVB rays. These sunglasses can protect you from the risk of corneal damage, macular degeneration, cataracts, and eyelid skin cancer. Also, those of us who love the bigger lenses are doing the right thing. Bigger lenses that cover more of the eye offer even better protection. And don’t get into the trap of thinking higher-priced glasses are doctor-approved. They are not. You might just be paying for a designer pair. I just ordered a pair of cuties from Peepers for myself!

For some ideas on what shape of sunglasses will flatter you, try and add some contrast to your face shape.  There are many resources online for identifying your face shape and finding corresponding suggestions for eyewear.
