My last blog discussed the advantages of local boutiques in building your wardrobe. This blog looks at another option: large department stores. As an Indiana Wardrobe Stylist, I do shop with clients at large department stores as well. One of my favorites in town is Nordstrom. It offers a wide selection of brands, styles, and price points, making it an excellent resource for creating a wardrobe that fits your lifestyle and your personal image.
The best examples of great department stores are Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom. I shop at both, and this time of year, I particularly like Nordstorm’s Anniversary sale that discounts fall clothing.
Benefits of Shopping at Large Department Stores
It’s great to find professional clothing, casual wear, evening attire, shoes, handbags, jewelry, outerwear, and accessories all in one place. That saves time and makes it easier to create complete outfits rather than purchasing random pieces that never seem to work together.
Another benefit is variety.
Every clothing brand is designed a little differently. Some brands are known for flattering petite figures, while others excel at tailoring for taller frames or athletic builds. Having multiple brands available allows us to compare fits and discover which labels consistently look best on your body. Finding the right fit can completely change how confident you feel in your clothes.
Quality department stores also offer choices for nearly every budget. Whether you’re investing in a timeless blazer, replacing wardrobe basics, or searching for a special occasion outfit, you can compare fabrics, construction, and price points without leaving the store. This allows us to prioritize where your wardrobe dollars will have the greatest impact.
As an image consultant, I encourage clients to think beyond the price tag. A well-made garment that fits beautifully and coordinates with many items already in your closet often provides far more value than several inexpensive purchases that are worn only once or twice.
Another reason I enjoy shopping with clients at quality department stores is the opportunity to build a complete wardrobe. We aren’t simply buying clothes—we’re creating versatility. A great jacket might work with trousers for the office, jeans for the weekend, and a dress for dinner. Those kinds of wardrobe connections help clients maximize every purchase.
Many department stores also provide professional alteration services. Proper tailoring is one of the easiest ways to elevate your appearance. A jacket with the correct sleeve length or trousers hemmed perfectly can make clothing look custom-made, regardless of the designer label.
Shop Smarter with an Indiana Wardrobe Stylist
Shopping can also become overwhelming when faced with hundreds of choices. It’s easy to become distracted by trends, sales, or impulse purchases that don’t truly fit your lifestyle.
That’s where working with an image consultant makes all the difference.
Before we ever begin shopping, we identify your wardrobe goals, determine your most flattering colors, evaluate your body proportions, and create a shopping strategy. Instead of buying clothing because it’s on sale or because it looked good on the mannequin, every purchase has a purpose.
My goal isn’t simply to help clients buy new clothes. My goal is to help them build a wardrobe that reflects who they are, supports their professional and personal lives, and gives them confidence every time they get dressed.
A quality department store offers wonderful possibilities, but the real secret is having a plan. When you shop with intention and expert guidance, you spend less, buy smarter, and create a wardrobe that serves you for years to come.
