Accessories are the icing on the cake – for both men and women. But for some of us, they are not front and center as we put together our outfits. But they should be! Because not every outfit we wear is exciting, memorable or even outstanding. But carefully selected accessories — and I am including shoes here too — make our style so much better. It’s funny how often I shop with clients and they never even think of their shoes. I have long heard that men look at each other’s shoes — even more than women do. Because men tend to wear their clothes over and over and more often than women do, their shoes are the one place they can add Indianapolis Men’s Styling surprise, elegance or just plain fun.
This blog is for men this time. Much has changed in the world of men’s wear. Across the board, men’s style has more choice, more elevated fabrics and accessories. And of course, just overall, our style has become much more relaxed. Gone are the days when men wore suits, oxford shoes and a tie. That is rare; although when I travel to other U.S, cities and abroad, such as London, I do see men wearing suits without ties and more relaxed shoes.
Accessories Advice for Indianapolis Men’s Styling
Of course, I am tooting my own horn now, but I do believe at the core of putting together interesting outfits is not only knowing your best colors but applying those colors day to day to your outfits. Knowing your best neutrals, which are at the core of putting together daily outfits is key.
To this you add accessories. Here are some examples:
- Watch
- Socks
- Shoes
- Pocket squares
- Hats
- Backpacks versus leather pouches
These items all add to your look. For shoes, I always advise men to buy the best quality versions they can afford. For summer, consider leather driving loafers and elevated sneakers made of leather or canvas. Try colored shoes that are light for summer and belts made of stripe or rope. Replace a black backpack you take to work with a leather cross body bag. The latter is more elegant.
Another way to look polished at work is to wear a long-sleeve short, not a short sleeve shirt. No one wants to see the hairy arms or even a hairy chest. Save this for date night! If you choose the right materials such as linen or cotton, you can layer and wear long-sleeve shirts and even lightweight blazers. They make the difference. Avoid very gaudy colors for button down shirts and a bright orange, red, yellow or even green cotton shirt for summer work. I might be more flexible for a summer night; although in the summer don’t forget to invest in some cotton shorts and short sleeve shirts. This is the place to wear them.

Keep this in mind — just because you see something in the store, it doesn’t mean it is right for you. Here is an example of some shirts that make me cringe–especially if they are worn for suits. (Photo by R0za)
