Building off last week’s post, I’ve compiled a list of Indiana Personal Stylist details to pay attention to when buying jeans.
Don’t buy the cheapest jeans you can find just because of the price tag. This is totally normal. But when it comes to jeans, price is only one tiny piece of the puzzle. The right pair can make you feel confident, pulled together, and comfortable all at once. The wrong pair will sit in your closet, judging you. I consider jeans a long-term investment that I will wear for years. Better quality jeans will last for years and a classic style will be in style for years too. This more than likely is straight or slight boot-cut jeans.
Advice for Buying Jeans from Your Indiana Personal Stylist
1. Fit Is Everything
Forget the number on the tag. Seriously. Sizes vary wildly between brands. Instead of obsessing over size, focus on how they fit your body. Do they hug where you want them to? Are they pulling across the hips? Gaping at the waist? Cutting into your stomach when you sit? Sit down. Bend over. Walk around. Good jeans should move with you, not fight you.
Also, rise matters more than people think. High-rise can smooth and define your waist. Mid-rise is usually the safest bet for everyday wear. For low-rise, proceed with caution unless you love that look.
2. Fabric & Stretch
Not all denim is created equal. Look at the fabric content. A little stretch (1–2% elastane or spandex) gives comfort and flexibility without losing shape. Too much stretch and they can sag by the end of the day. 100% cotton denim feels structured and classic, but takes time to break in.
Think about your lifestyle. If you’re running errands or traveling, stretch is your friend. If you want that structured and vintage vibe, go more rigid.
3. Cut & Shape
Straight, oversized and baggy, bootcut, flare, wide-leg — the cut changes the entire vibe. Straight-leg jeans are universally flattering and very current. Bootcut balances hips and works great with boots (obviously). Wide-leg feels modern and chic.
The key is proportion. If you’re wearing a looser top, try a straighter or slimmer pair of jeans. If you love a wide-leg, pair it with something more fitted up top.
4. Wash & Color
Dark wash is polished and slimming. Light wash feels casual and fresh. Black jeans are your secret weapon — dress them up, dress them down. Distressing adds personality, but make sure it feels intentional and not like you wrestled a raccoon.
Also, check fading and whiskering. Strategic fading can be flattering. Random fading… not so much.
5. Length Matters
Too long and you look sloppy. Too short, and it looks accidental. The hem should work with the shoes you wear most. If you’re constantly in sneakers, try ankle-length or cropped. If you live in boots, make sure there’s enough length to cover the top without bunching.
And don’t be afraid of tailoring. A small hem job can turn “pretty good” jeans into “these are my jeans.”
