Understanding Your Neutrals to Build a Wardrobe

I remember talking with a co-worker once about colors to wear to work. Neither of us had any style or Color Analysis Indianapolis training, but we both liked clothing and style. My friend especially always dressed so professionally yet chic.

Color Analysis Indianapolis Advice on Neutrals

If you are like me back in the day, you had a couple of “neutral” pieces that you wore all the time such as black pants, black skirt and black dress. All women see black pants as the default piece that holds their wardrobe together.

Now I do think all women should have some black pieces in their wardrobe. But you don’t need as many as you think! This is especially true if black is not a good color for you. For me, being a true spring, black is not in my color book. So, I do limit the amount of black I own.

Make sure to have more than just black neutrals in your wardrobe according to Color Analysis Indianapolis expert Beth Divine image shows collection of clothesBeyond black, there are many colors that qualify as neutrals. Everyone interprets “neutrals” differently. For me as a personal stylist, I see neutrals as solid colors you look good in that can mix and match. For me, neutrals are more than white, cream, black, navy, camel, and gray. Neutrals can also be royal blue, light blue, burgundy, brown, hunter green, and olive. Having skirts, dress pants, blazers, and even jeans in these colors is going to be a real outfit builder in your closet! Of course, anytime you wear these neutrals on the top, you want them to be your best colors.

For me, I don’t wear black, white, gray, or hunter green near my face. These colors wash me out and bring out any shadowing in my face! If you haven’t had a color analysis, you might not believe that, but trust me! I do own black jeans, burgundy and hunter green leather pants, and white jeans that I wear on the bottom.

For outfits, I will wear these color combinations:

  • Navy jacket and olive pants. I like to wear my Veronica Beard blazer and add the denim dickey. Then, I add olive chino pants and white sneakers or burgundy flats.
  • Black leather skirt and fuchsia cashmere sweater with black boots.
  • Cream cropped blazer with burgundy or hunter green pants. Black/white spectator shoes or black booties. I might add a scarf that has cream, green, brown, and burgundy to tie the colors together.
  • Olive blazer and t-shirt in turquoise with white straight-leg jeans.
  • Print silk blouse, cream blazer, jeans, and burgundy flats.
  • Cream sweater and burgundy leather pants. Leopard flats or python booties.

Where to Shop for Neutral Colors

For the core basics of coats, pants, jeans, and blazers that you want to mix and match, remember to buy at a higher price point. Some examples are avoiding stores like Kohl’s, Walmart, Meier, Amazon, and JCPenney. Strive for better quality at Nordstrom, Saks (online), Talbots, JJill, WHBM, and JCrew.

One exception is JCrew Factory. I have found some really sharp blazers there in 100 percent wool or cotton. These blazers will not last for eternity. But for the price point of $120 or less they look great, fit great, and look more expensive.
