Hair coloring is a common styling habit for women, but there’s a growing trend of men incorporating it into their routine.
According to Modern Salon, salon professionals indicate that less than 20 percent of male clients color their hair. Also, 88 percent of men say they have never had a color or blending service. But among those who have, 43 percent say they get it done at every appointment or most of the time.
Hair coloring for the modern man is not just for covering gray. Many men are looking for current ideas and techniques to craft their image like hair shaping, color enhancement, and beard trimming and styling. As a result, we have seen a surge in men’s hair care services at Saint Charles International Hair Care.
Often we will use a client’s skin tone and texture to select a fitting color tone for his hair. If the skin tone is fair, we may recommend lighter shades which give depth and dimension to create a fuller texture. This can be a bonus for men who have fine or thinning hair. If the client has a darker complexion, we may choose a crepuscular or tenebrous tone. Neither of these options have anything to do with covering gray hair, but can certainly correct concerns.
A popular color technique that I recommend for clients new to coloring is called gray blending. We use an artist brush and hand paint selected strands of hair to blend with the existing color or create a subtle blended look. This can be appealing to men with short gray hair who would rather have their hair whisper change instead of shout it. Most men who select this service report that no one usually notices the change unless they’re specifically told.
According to Boulevard, a company that develops software and collects data for the salon industry, 67 percent of men seek multiple services in a single salon visit. And this number is likely to climb as discerning males explore possibilities for hair color.
